Tallman ShopRite Goes Green For Earth Day

FAIR LAWN, N.J. -- On Friday, April 22, Inserra Supermarkets' ShopRites in New Jersey and New York are hosting "Going Green" Earth Day events.

Select stores will be giving away a free Earth Day reusable bag; a free petunia seed to plant at home, for the first 125 customers with children; and informational handouts about ShopRite's environmental sustainability initiatives, including eco-friendly products, how-to details on reducing energy and water usage, and home composting tips.

Shoppers bagging their groceries in reusable bags at checkout can enter a raffle to win prizes including two New York Giants or New York Jets tickets, an Apple iPad Air 2, a Nest Thermostat, a Goal Zero Portable Solar Panel Battery Charging Kit, and a Philips Hue LED Lighting Starter Kit.

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Here are the participating stores:

Inserra ShopRites have been active in environmental and community initiatives for more than three decades, organizers note. The stores promotes reusing, recycling and reducing the number of grocery bags, to reduce the amount of trash in landfills and resources needed to create new plastic bags. Inserra Supermarkets is also part of the Wakefern Food Corp., which operates its own recycling center in Elizabeth, New Jersey. That facility has recycled nearly two million tons of material since 1970.

More than one billion people in 192 countries are expected to take actions to protect the environment in observation of Earth Day this year. Since its inception in 1970, Earth Day has focused on the need to stabilize and reduce global greenhouse gas emissions and fight climate change.
